“So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!” -1 Corinthians 10:12
Just yesterday, many of us in the GTA experienced a sudden and severe squall that swept through the region, leaving behind chaos, fallen trees, and widespread power outages. What made it so striking was the contrast—the day had begun with sunshine and calm, a seemingly perfect spring afternoon. No one anticipated the storm that was coming.
This sudden shift in weather is a sobering reflection of life itself. Often, we walk through seasons where everything feels steady—our routines are predictable, our spiritual lives seem secure, and we feel confident in our footing. But it’s in these very moments of ease and familiarity that we are most at risk of letting our guard down.
Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:12, offers a timely warning: “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!”
It’s a reminder that even in moments of strength, we are vulnerable. Complacency can dull our spiritual sensitivity.
And like that tree that stood tall in the morning but fell under the force of the storm, we too can falter when trials suddenly come upon us.
This verse doesn’t aim to instill fear—it calls us to a posture of watchfulness and humble dependence. We stand not because of our own strength, but because of God’s sustaining grace. Our confidence must always be anchored in Him, not in our experiences, knowledge, or past victories.
As we reflect, let this be a moment to examine our hearts:
Reflection Questions:
Are you daily cultivating dependence on God, or relying more on your own strength?
When the storms of life come, what are you anchored to?
